Cool boxes tested: these products defy the summer heat

A cool box is essential to protect drinks or barbecue food from the heat. The Czech partner magazine of Stiftung Warentest has tested boxes - we have some useful ones in our shop.

The yield

The Czech online magazine dTest.cz tested eleven coolers. The Powerbox Plus models with a capacity of 24 or 36 litres from Campingaz scored "good". The Outwell Ecocool cool boxes for 24 and 35 litres received a "satisfactory", as did the Severin box with the uncool name TKB 2925.

The test criteria

All speakers were measured against the following criteria:

  • Insulation
  • Duration of cooling down
  • Breakage safety
  • Power consumption

"The 35-litre Outwell Ecocool Slate Grey cool box provided the best insulation, but due to poor marks in the drop test, it is only satisfactory overall," summarises Stiftung Warentest. After an hour at a sunny 20 degrees, the temperature inside the Ecocool was a relaxed 8.5 degrees.

The Severin model and the Campingaz products came out on top when it came to cooling down using electricity. StiWa praises: "After twelve hours at an outside temperature of 25 degrees, it was coldest in the two Campingaz boxes and in the Severin: In all three cool boxes, the temperature had dropped to below six degrees."

We then tested how stable the boxes are if they were to fall. Be it from the pannier rack of the bike or from the camping table, because children or footballs flying across or something. Here too, the Severin and Campingaz boxes came out on top. They survived a fall from a height of one metre unscathed.

In contrast, the StiWa has little to report in terms of power consumption: All models consume about as much power as specified. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

That's about it.
