Edge 40 Neo and Moto G54: affordable smartphones in Pantone colours

Motorola uses vegan leather and Pantone colours for the Edge 40 Neo and Moto G54. In terms of price and features, the two smartphones are positioned in the mid-range and entry-level segments.
Motorola has unveiled two new smartphones. The Moto G54 should score points above all with its value for money. The Edge 40 Neo has a more powerful camera system, is waterproof and offers slightly more performance. In terms of colour, the manufacturer wants to score points with its cooperation with Pantone.
Edge 40 Neo: High refresh rate and waterproof
For example, the Edge 40 Neo comes in three colours: "Black Beauty", "Soothing Sea" and "Caneel Bay". The black version has a matt acrylic back. Motorola uses faux leather vegan leather for the colourful versions. This feels very pleasant and non-slip, at least on the Edge 40. The entire housing is IP68 waterproof. In the tests, it survived 30 minutes in 1.5 metres of water without damage.

On the front, you look at a 6.55-inch OLED display. It goes around the edge on the long sides. The screen has a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels and a maximum refresh rate of 144 hertz. The brightness of up to 1300 nits ensures good readability in sunshine.
Motorola uses the Mediatek Dimensity 7030 chipset with 5G, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4, plus twelve gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of internal memory. The 5000 mAh battery should be half charged in 15 minutes with the supplied 68 watt power supply unit.
The Edge 40 Neo has two cameras on the back. The main camera has a resolution of 50 megapixels. The ultra-wide-angle camera has 13 megapixels and the front camera delivers selfies with 32 megapixels.
Moto G54: Could be quite decent for the price
The Moto G54 also boasts four Pantone colours: "Midnight Blue", "Glacier Blue", "Mint Green" and "Indigo Blue". The last two colours are available in vegan leather. The other two have an acrylic back. According to Motorola, the smartphone is water-repellent. However, it does not have IP certification.

The 6.5-inch display with full HD resolution refreshes the image at up to 120 hertz. Under the bonnet is the Dimensity 7020 from Mediatek, which is supported by eight gigabytes of RAM. Although the chipset is capable of 5G, it only offers Wi-Fi 5 for wireless networks. You can expand the 256 gigabyte internal memory with a microSD card. There is a 3.5 mm socket for headphones or their cables. The 5000 mAh battery charges rather slowly with a maximum of 15 watts.
The main camera on the back could deliver good photos with its 50 megapixels. However, I don't expect much from the 2-megapixel macro camera. The front camera with 16 megapixels is probably perfectly fine for selfies.

As a primary school pupil, I used to sit in a friend's living room with many of my classmates to play the Super NES. Now I get my hands on the latest technology and test it for you. In recent years at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, now at Digitec and Galaxus.
