The "Odour Off" nappy pail is really leak-proof
A nappy bin right next to the changing table is a must. The "Odour Off" model from Chicco promises to be absolutely odour-proof. But is that true? I put it through its paces for you.
In my experience, two things are particularly important when changing nappies: speed and free hands. Depending on how dirty your little one has got themselves, all the dirty bits should be quickly out of the way. Otherwise it will stink. This makes it all the more important to have a nappy bin that is really odour-proof.
Plus: Depending on their mood, children may fidget when changing nappies or reach with astonishing accuracy exactly where they shouldn't. That's why it's essential for a nappy pail that I can use it with one hand. With three children and four grandchildren of my own, I know what I'm talking about.
Chicco claims to have solved both of these requirements - odour stop and one-handed operation - with its nappy pail.
Surprisingly large and stable
Before I can use the pail, however, I still have to assemble it «» . Thanks to the enclosed quick guide, this is done quickly. I insert two cylinders into each other and turn them once. And that's it.

Then comes the holder for the bags, which I also tighten once according to the instructions. Finally comes the lid with its large opening. More on this in a moment.
For a stable hold and tightness, I have to make sure that the parts are turned according to the instructions so that it clicks «» . The bucket is then ready for use.
After assembling it, I am surprised by the size of the bucket. The «Odour Off» is available in two versions. I opted for the larger version. This is just under 63 centimetres high. The smaller counterpart measures around 46 centimetres. You can find the more compact version with the same technology in our shop.
I like the look. The bucket doesn't look like a nursery at all and the plastic feels high-quality and sturdy. I can also imagine the design as a cosmetics bin for the bathroom.

Cleverly made opening
The «Odour Off» has a rotating bowl instead of a hinged lid, which serves as an insert. The handle is more than just a carrying handle. I use it to turn the tray downwards and the nappy ends up in the bin. In everyday life, I have to make sure that it is in the position «ready», i.e. with the opening facing upwards.

After the nappies and wet wipes have landed in it, I move the large lever once to transport the contents into the inside of the bucket. Afterwards, I use the lever to return the bin to its original position.

Now for emptying: The lid has to come off, of course. I notice that despite the large handle, the bucket is sometimes difficult to open with wet or slippery hands. It's easier if I clamp it between my two feet and then turn the top part.
I have bag freedom
Many manufacturers offer suitable bags for their nappy bins and point out that the odour is only really trapped if you use exactly these bags. These bag cartridges are often anything but a bargain.
Bags are also available from Chicco as an option for the bucket. The emphasis is on optional. I can also use classic bin liners. These are hung in the corresponding holder and then sit securely in the bin.
And what about the odours?
The specially shaped lid insert is designed to prevent odours from escaping. The lower part of the hemisphere sits in the position «ready», just above the insert. That sounds promising, but at first I was sceptical as to whether it could work.
But it does. Of course, the area around the bucket doesn't suddenly smell like the forest floor, but the typical odour that escapes from many other nappy buckets is absent here.
Chicco may forgive me, but I wanted to find out for sure and subjected the bucket to an endurance test. Four cotton pads soaked in nail varnish remover also ended up in the bucket. Volatile hydrocarbons are a real challenge. And as expected, some of them escaped from the bucket.
But while the bathroom and half the flat usually stink of nail polish remover, the Chicco bucket was much less so. Respect.
In a nutshell
I am thrilled
