Lithium thionyl chloride batteries are available in many different sizes and shapes, making them versatile for various applications. They are used in numerous applications and are characterized by their high energy density, which is higher than that of all other primary cells. This makes lithium thionyl chloride batteries particularly suitable for applications that require a low power demand over an extended period. In typical applications such as timers, locking cylinders, heating cost and hot water meters, toll systems, etc., lithium thionyl chloride batteries can be used for months and years without needing to be replaced. The longevity of lithium thionyl chloride batteries is evident not only during use but also during storage. Due to their extremely low self-discharge rate of just 1% per year, batteries of this technology can be stored for a long time. The lithium thionyl chloride battery (LiSOCl2) is a non-rechargeable battery with lithium as the anode and a graphite electrode as the cathode. Thionyl chloride is cathodically reduced and serves both as a solvent and as an electrolyte. With a cell voltage of 3.6 volts, lithium thionyl chloride batteries have a significantly higher voltage level than other types of primary batteries. This voltage level is maintained nearly constant throughout the entire discharge duration of the battery. However, the LiSOCl2 cell chemistry stands out not only for this reason but also for its energy density, which is superior to all other primary cells at up to 710 Wh/kg. Jauch brand lithium thionyl chloride cells are available in cylindrical form in sizes ranging from 1/2AA to D and can be used in a wide temperature range from -60 °C to +85 °C. Even at very low temperatures, the cells exhibit good performance and consistently high voltage.
