Benefits of OM5 technology. OM5 technology offers a range of improvements over previous quality classes. Previous multimode fibers are optimized for an optical window or wavelength range of 850 nm. Outside of this window, signals are heavily attenuated, requiring Ethernet signals to be transmitted over several parallel multimode fibers. For example, two fibers are needed for 10-Gigabit Ethernet (one fiber for sending, one for receiving). In 40 or 100-Gigabit Ethernet applications, signals are transmitted over eight fibers.
