The Sony VPL-VW5000ES combines native UHD resolution and a long-lasting laser light source at a price that is currently unrivalled. The picture quality is impressive, although savings on the lens cost many points. However, the new Sony is definitely a projector highlight.
The Sony VPL-XW5000ES delivers a top-class native 4K picture. The resolution is crisp, the colours and contrasts are convincing. The brightness is high enough that the room does not need to be completely darkened during use. Video players can be connected via two HDMI ports; the lack of speakers or audio outputs recommends the use of an AV receiver...
With the Sony, the modern laser light source comes at the expense of comfort and flexible set-up. The lack of motorisation and the reduced focal length range of the optics may unnecessarily limit some cineastes who rightly expect more in this price range. The lack of an ultra-fast HDMI interface, however, will probably only deter hardcore gamers...
Within its performance class, the XW5000ES delivers bright, sharp cinema images that are very suitable for a living room installation.
