I understand that the screen of a smartphone and tablet can be streamed via Miracast. However, since Apple relies on its AirPlay service, I wanted to know if this function is also supported or if I need an AppleTv box to mirror an Apple device.

This should work with an AppleTV box. To share directly from an IOS device, you need either a cable or an additional app. Via cable with Lightning to HDMI works very well. I still have to test Lightning to USB C. Via additional app well, I tried the LG TV Plus app recommended by LG as well as the TV Cast app listed in the LG Content Store. Unfortunately, both apps are not usable in my eyes. Sharing photos is extremely slow and videos usually don't work, at least for me. Maybe that's because I film in 4K. I have to say that I only tested the apps briefly. So the only alternative is cable or AppleTV Box. It's a shame that such incompatibilities still occur today.
