So far I have had a Canon MX multifunction printer, which also achieved good-very good results for photo printing (when using photo paper). Is the same type from Brother also available as an A4 model, the A3 is already very large...?

I have had two of these types from Brother. They are good for copying, scanning and printing documents, even up to A3 size.
For photos, Brother's MFC printers are nothing. For that I have a separate Canon iX6850 printer, which is good for pictures even up to A3.

The machine is primarily an MFP (multifunction printer: print, scan, fax) - but not colour fast for photo printing, no matter on which paper and with which settings. I use a Canon selphy for creating passport photos.
