New York at the beginning of the 20th century:

"You and I experience time as a continuous line, from one minute to the next." Then the old clockmaker turned the knob on the back, causing the minute hand to move backward. "But if we were to come into contact with a fragment of time, we would no longer experience time as a continuous line, but as an intricate web. Cause and effect would no longer be so clearly distinguishable. Very few people have come into contact with one of the time fragments, and even fewer have been able to report on its magical powers."

New York in 1999:

Twelve-year-old Adam finds an empty snow globe in the attic above his uncle Henry's bakery. But then a small snow-covered town appears in the globe, and when he shakes it, Adam suddenly finds himself no longer at home – and not in the same year anymore…
