The summer holidays are just around the corner, and Kalle's dad has promised that they will finally go on vacation – and even to Italy! Kalle and his little brother Frieda have already packed, and Dad Konrad still fits into his swim trunks when his boss calls just before their departure, saying he is needed at work. The disappointment is immense, and when the boys accompany their dad on his postal route the next day, one is more dejected than the other. When the usually brave Kalle can no longer hold back his tears, Dad makes a decision. He doesn’t finish the route but instead turns the postal van southward. Although they still have several packages in the van, the three of them can leave their worries behind, station by station, on their road trip. They encounter new and old friends and learn on their way to Italy that sometimes the unreasonable can be the most reasonable choice.
