What would modernity be without religion? What role does religion play in the fabric of our modern society? Is it merely an anachronism that disrupts the growth trajectory in global competition? Just a form of superstition that one may indulge in privately but should keep silent about publicly? It is no secret that Christian churches in this country face a significant problem, independent of current scandals. The decline in membership alone highlights this resonance issue. But what if religion, in general, no longer generates any resonance in democratic society? The renowned sociologist Hartmut Rosa poses a question that could be pivotal for the future development of our modernity: What does society lose, what does democracy lose, when religion no longer plays a role in it? What is the potential of religion for our future as a democracy? Is it really wise to forgo the rich treasure of the religious?
