Heidi and Clara spend a lot of time together. Heidi tells Clara about the mountains, and Clara would love to hike up to the alpine pastures with Heidi. But that’s not possible with a wheelchair. Will Clara ever walk again? Heidi encourages her friend to try, but Miss Rottenmeyer is against it. Clara could get hurt. When Clara's father returns from a long trip, Miss Rottenmeyer wants to convince him that Heidi is not good for Clara. Heidi should leave the house, preferably forever. But Clara proves to her father that Heidi is the best friend she could wish for, and Heidi is allowed to stay. The girls are now supposed to be taught together, but learning is difficult for Heidi. However, Clara and her funny grandmother help Heidi believe that she will soon be able to read and write. And Heidi helps Clara continue to believe that one day she will be able to walk again.
