Gesso is used as a primer to prepare painting surfaces such as canvas, cardboard, and wood. It enhances the adhesion of acrylic or oil paint layers and is applied to a clean, grease-free surface. The transparent artist acrylic paint gesso can be applied to a raw canvas before a tinted gesso to avoid visibility of the transition to the back of the canvas.
