Hello kaufmich, I'm not interested in traffic jam reports. If many people use the proposed new route, it only means that the new route will soon be congested too and my original route will have fewer vehicles in traffic jams. So all in all, it's just a loose, loose situation. So I'm staying put and practising patience. Sorry I can't offer any help.

Unfortunately, without a smartphone, TomTom has no traffic information.
Not a big problem in Switzerland, but it could become one abroad if you have a mobile
a mobile subscription where roaming costs are incurred.
I have switched to Garmin. There, traffic reports also work without a smartphone.

Hi, I use the Tomtom wifi connection which connects to my smartphone which I have set up as a "wifi access point". Connecting the two devices is very simple, first put the phone in access point and then do a wifi search with the Tomtom and choose the one proposed by the smartphone. The connection is made automatically every time I start the car and the Tomtom is switched on, so I don't have to worry about it. Once this connection has been made, the first time you need to create a Tomtom account (email and password) or use an existing account. This smartphone/Tomtom connection allows me to get free live traffic information, which is essential at peak times, for example by suggesting an alternative route.

With Bluetooth and your mobile, you can get fairly up-to-date and fairly accurate traffic jam reports (often accurate to within 50 metres!) and the sat nav calculates alternatives, which are usually - but not always - good.

There is also an FM-TMC antenna in the charging cable of the sat nav and the sat nav also receives traffic jam reports, but much less accurately.

We have a Tomtom 6" in one car and an old mobile with the Tomtom software and a cheap data plan in the other. The Tomtom 6" is easier to use, the mobile calculates much faster and copes better, especially in very heavy traffic - the Tomtom Classic is sometimes overwhelmed in very heavy traffic.

No Tomtom device has lasted us much longer than 2 years.

Do you really need an external sat nav?
For the CHF 120 you can also drive for quite a long time with your mobile (Google Maps or Apple map) and data volume (e.g. Swisscom prepaid).
I bought this TomTom and never used it because the maps were very poor (roads not found, etc.). So would be unused to give away. 😎

If you download the maps to your mobile at home beforehand, you need almost no data volume!
