The Series 62 was developed and delivered by the Henschel company for the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft in the 1920s. The machines were two-cylinder saturated steam locomotives. A total of 15 units were produced. Although the locomotives were built as early as 1928, the Deutsche Reichsbahn only accepted 62 003–015 in 1932. The reasons for this were low demand and the high price of the locomotives. After World War II, eight locomotives remained with the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Of these, only 62 007 received a computer number.
