With its over 1300-year history, Würzburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany. Located on both sides of the Main River, Würzburg offers a wealth of sights and historical monuments, such as the Old Main Bridge, Marienberg Fortress, Käppele, Falkenhaus, Old Crane, St. Kilian Cathedral, the Bürgerspital zum Heiligen Geist, and the Würzburg Residence. A special excursion destination is the famous baroque pilgrimage church Käppele on the hill next to Marienberg Fortress, built by Baltasar Neumann. The Würzburg Residence was also designed by Baltasar Neumann. In 1981, the Würzburg Residence along with its court garden was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Würzburg's Julius Maximilian University is the oldest in Bavaria, with a history dating back to 1402. One of Würzburg's most famous citizens was Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. His original laboratory can be visited at the Röntgen Memorial. With so much city history, it is challenging to choose the right motif for an Advent calendar. The view over the Main River towards Marienberg Fortress and the Old Main Bridge also offers some artistic freedom. The Christmas market is located in Würzburg's old town.
