«Chaotic in a good way»

Despite close ties with the Swiss parent company Digitec Galaxus, which has more than 2,500 employees, Galaxus still has a strong start-up character in Germany. Momme Möller joined the Category Management team in Hamburg over two years ago. Today, he’s giving us an insight into his everyday life at Galaxus Deutschland and tells us how he manages to balance work and his master's degree at the same time.

Momme, what’s your job at Galaxus?
I’m a Portfolio Development Manager in the Category Management team. I identify suitable partners for our product categories Computing and Office & Gaming and make sure the integration of their products in our shop galaxus.de works smoothly. These can be suppliers or manufacturers. My job is also to ensure that the quality of the product display and data is as high as possible, i.e. that everything is displayed correctly in the shop and that customers don't receive any incorrect or incomplete information.

You've been at Galaxus for more than two years. What’s special about working at Galaxus in Hamburg?
From day 1, working here has been a bit chaotic – in a good way. It's always felt like a start-up. Our storage system is a bit chaotic. As is our seating plan. As a result, everyone quickly gets to know each other and grows together. Many of us have become friends. In my opinion, the team is the biggest benefit. It's young and dynamic, just like the whole e-commerce industry. There’s something new happening all the time.

Most people in Hamburg work in Category Management. But there are also several Category Management teams at Digitec Galaxus in Switzerland. How do you work together? Do you speak Swiss German?
I’ve trained my Swiss colleagues to speak High German with me! (laughs) We collaborate well, we work more closely together by the day. Visiting Zurich for important meetings or company events is always a highlight. We have a lot of autonomy in Germany and everyone is responsible for solving their own problems. But, of course, we rely on the Swiss teams at times. We have to actively advocate for the issues that are important in our own area and this can require patience. But when something is solved that we've worked for, it feels great.

What do you do if you’re not advocating for the development of galaxus.de?
I'm quite a sports fan, I like to watch and play football and tennis. Apart from that, I'm also doing a master's degree. I’m studying e-commerce part-time at University of Applied Sciences Wedel. I only started my studies a few months ago.

That's why you changed your full-time position to part-time one, right? How did that go?
Exactly, I was able to reduce my workload from 5 to 4 days a week. Galaxus offers all positions as part-time models. I study face-to-face, not remotely, but I can also do my studies part-time. It took me a while to get used to balancing work and studies, but it's all worked out now. Galaxus supports my studies.

A master’s degree in e-commerce? Is there anything left to learn after having worked at Galaxus for over two years?
Of course, working on the job is always the most valuable part. E-commerce can be very diverse, also when it comes to what the tasks in the industry involve. My studies, however, offer me new insights into the technical side of things. I also learn a lot about areas I haven't seen on the job yet.
