Lawn sprinkler sales booming despite water shortage

Gardens and lawns are suffering in the heatwave. But owners aren’t leaving their green spaces to fate. This June and July, Galaxus sold 75 per cent more lawn sprinklers than in the same period last year. There are a few things to bear in mind when watering to keep grass truly green.
The latest heatwave has a firm grip on Europe. In Switzerland, water levels are falling and municipalities are calling for citizens to conserve water (linked article in German). In Germany, more and more districts and municipalities are imposing water bans (linked article in German); depending on the region, gardens may no longer be watered during the day, or pools may no longer be filled with water. In France and Italy, the drought is even more acute.
Yet when it comes to their gardens, few seem willing to compromise. Galaxus’s sales figures suggest as much, with demand for lawn sprinklers exploding in recent weeks. In June and July 2026, Galaxus customers bought over 75 per cent more sprinklers than in the same period the previous year. Year to date, sales are up 65 per cent on Galaxus – and this comes after sprinkler sales hit a record high in 2025 due to the heat.
Garden hoses (+33 per cent) and irrigation systems (+28 per cent) are also landing in Galaxus customers’ baskets more often this year than last.
The early sprinkler helps the lawn
It seems people want lush green lawns despite heatwaves and water shortages. According to Galaxus’s product experts, there are a few things to bear in mind to make that happen:
- Start early: You should water your lawn as early in the morning as possible. Ideally between 5 and 9 a.m., before the heat hits. That way, the water can penetrate deep into the soil and reach the roots before the sun gets stronger, keeping more moisture in the soil.
- Be thorough over frequent: You should only water your lawn once or twice a week, but when you do, it should be for around 45 to 60 minutes. This way, the water can reach deeper soil layers, encouraging strong root growth. The lawn then becomes more resilient and can cope better with longer dry spells.
- Avoid watering during the day and in the evening: Because of the heat during the day, much of the water evaporates before the plants or lawn can benefit from it. But if the grass stays wet overnight, fungal diseases have an easy time of it.
- Use a timer: If you’re not an early riser, an automatic irrigation system with a timer is a worthwhile investment. The lawn sprinkler then switches on automatically while you’re still snoozing in bed.
