Depending on the federal state, very different products are most in demand at the online department stores' Galaxus: In the West it's monitors, in the East smartphones - and the nation's biggest Lego fans live in Bremen.
Smartphones dominate the second most sold product types, especially in those states where monitors are in first place. In four federal states, on the other hand, ink for printers is high on the list.
Galaxus is an online department stores' with a wide range of products from baby bottles to garden lounges and bondage accessories. However, the online shop is still really popular for its electronic products - above all for its selection of monitors: Since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, these have been more in demand at Galaxus in Germany than any other product type. In second place among the bestsellers are smartphones and in third place printer ink, which has made up many places in recent years. Only the Lego building sets are without electricity in the current top 10 best-selling products.
Germany-wide, there have only been six states so far this year where monitors are not topping the charts: Smartphones are the top sellers in Thuringia, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein, toner for the printer in Saxony-Anhalt and a particularly large number of people are assembling Lego sets in Bremen this year.
It gets more colourful in third place: while Hesse is home to many young-at-heart Lego fans, Berliners buy stacks of computer mice. And in many German states, Galaxus customers are treating themselves to new hard drives or SSDs (solid state disks) for the PC tower.
But why do nine of the ten Galaxus bestsellers in Germany come from the electronics and IT sector? The main reason is probably the product range: Galaxus was launched at the end of 2018 in Germany as a tech specialist. The product categories household, living, do it + garden, toys and beauty + health were added later. And so a good third of the now almost 1.2 million products in the range are still IT or electronics items.
"In addition, monitors, smartphones, ink or toner tend to be high-priced products," says Leader Category Management Office & Gaming Anne Limper-Menapace from Galaxus in Hamburg. "With these, consumers compare prices more often - and also try a new online shop if they find a good offer."

In addition, Galaxus is popular with business customers: companies have bought a quarter of the products that went over the virtual counter at the online retailer so far this year. And there were also many monitors among them.
Which products could make it into Galaxus' upper sales ranks in the next few years are shown by the bestsellers of the two Swiss sister shops Digitec and Galaxus. The online department stores' Galaxus has been serving its customers in its home market for ten years, the electronics specialist Digitec even 21 years. Accordingly, diapers, craft supplies or social games should soon be storming the charts in Germany as well.
Steep upwards in 2022 compared to 2021 so far, especially in shoes and clothes: The sneakers in the range have gained 1254 places in the Galaxus sales ranking (to rank 250) - more than any other product type. In 3rd, 6th, 7th and 9th place among the biggest climbers are running shoes, tights, sports pants and functional shirts. In addition, products related to ironing and sewing and wipes are significantly more in demand at Galaxus than last year.
