The unit itself has no on/off button. It just runs when the power is connected. But I can't switch it off with the remote control. Is this how it is supposed to be and do I always have to unplug the power cable or is there a defect?

Hi, unfortunately not. We have tried different versions with the manufacturer but to no avail. We opted for a Viewsonic display with integrated Android system and it works great.
