The white-kneed tarantula, belonging to the bombardier spider family, defends itself in case of danger by throwing urticating hairs towards its attacker. If these hairs come into contact with the throat and eyes, they cause intense itching. They are found exclusively in the tropical rainforests of northern Brazil and feed on insects. Female spiders can reach a body length of 9 cm and have more vividly colored body hair. The most striking feature of the white-kneed tarantula is, as its name suggests, the white rings on its joints.
