From a technical perspective, the blind rivet consists of two components: the hollow rivet and the rivet mandrel. While screws, clinching, and punch riveting require access to both sides of the component, the unique feature of the blind rivet is that only one-sided access to the component is necessary.

During the setting process, the rivet mandrel is pulled with the jaws of the setting device and deforms the hollow rivet until it reaches a predefined, secure fit in the component. Finally, the rivet mandrel breaks off at the designated fracture point, and the remaining mandrel can be recycled. The remaining rivet mandrel is the part of the mandrel that stays in the hollow rivet and can provide an additional securing function depending on the application.
